Prevention in Florida

What The Numbers Are Telling Us

The Child Fatality Prevention website was created to raise public awareness about child fatalities and assist communities with identifying where additional resources or efforts are needed to assist struggling families. This section of the website will provide context to the data along with information and resources for how to use the data to understand trends and develop or support existing prevention efforts.

Prevention Campaigns

As part of a continuing effort to reduce fatalities, Florida has embarked on a number of campaigns to highlight the biggest causes of child fatalities in the state. Our campaigns are below and a campaigns flyer is available for download.

The Safe Sleep Campaign

This campaign encourages the public to donate new pack n plays (portable cribs) to designated locations, which will be distributed to needy families by local coalitions.

Water Safety Campaign

The state loses more children under the age of five to drowning than any other state in the nation. As we play in the summer sun, it is important to emphasize supervision and swim safety while spending time with friends and family around the pool. Visit the Water Safety webpage

High Temperatures and Hot Cars

In just 10 minutes, the temperature of a parked vehicle can rise 20 degrees. The crack of a window, even by inches, is no match to combat the rising heat. This heat can be deadly, especially for children because their body temperatures rise five times faster than adults. Visit the Car Safety webpage
